Hopper cars

Using railroad hopper cars as bulk storage has been around for quite some time. It's quick, strong and cost effective way to store bulk commodities. It works especially well if you are currently receiving grain via railroad as we can send you one of our grain cars directly to your siding. Then all you need to do is make a platform for the railroad car to sit on and hire a crane to move it for you. You now will be able to move grain from one railroad car to another with little effort.

Prices vary greatly depending on your location and what is available at the time of your inquiry. The trend that we have seen is that most railroad served grain customers are very large corporations who are not interested in saving money by using our equipment. We suppose the smaller grain customers are using trucks as a primary means of moving their product.

Either way, the market for this type of storage is slow enough were we do not stock these type of cars any longer. Any hopper cars that we get in are scraped out within a matter weeks. If the timing is right, you may be able to catch us when we have a few of these in stock.

Please send us an e-mail with the following information:

Key Benefits

  • Low cost storage solution
  • Covered top and set above ground to prevent water damage
  • Lockable gates and covers to prevent theft
  • Keeps vermin out

Pricing

As a general rule, plan on paying about $6,000 for each hopper car.  You will then need to factor shipping on top of that, FOB Pueblo, CO.

Railroad hopper cars typically have:

  • Bottom outlet gates
  • Top trough type hatch covers or sometimes they have round hatch covers
  • Most likely you will be buying the entire car (wheels, brakes, couplers, etc.) unless you are near one of our storage yards.
  • We do not have drawings for the hopper stands/stilts.  You will need to come up with something yourself.  Pictures should help you but that's all we can provide.
